Welcome Back for our 5th year of OBOB at City View Charter!
The Oregon Battle of the Books, OBOB, is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant. Students in 3rd-12 grade, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. The mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students. What do I do as a parent? ✦Look for the commitment letter at Student Led Conferences. ✦Students will form teams at the first meeting. ✦Support your child in accessing the books via the library (talk with their teacher if this is not possible). What do the students need to do? ✦Sign the commitment letter at Student Led Conferences. ✦Get excited about reading new books! ✦Talk about the books with others. ✦Read, read, read! Students had an opportunity to watch the book trailers today as our official OBOB kick-off, and there was a lot of excitement about these books! That is what this program is all about! Please let us know if you have any questions.

Hello fellow OBOBers! With summer in our sights, now is the perfect time to get started on reading these hand selected titles! The 2018-2019 book titles are out. The book trailers will be available in the near future, as will the annotated list, but for now, please check out these titles and enjoy a few good books over your summer break!
As a reminder, you don't have to be an official Oregon Battle of the Books participant to read these books. Please let me know if you have any questions. Happy Reading! Melinda Jared 3rd to 5th Grade Division

This is the moment that the OBOBers have been preparing for!
Details to come. Battle will be held in the Community Room and in the Art Room this year. We will need volunteers to make this battle possible. Please email me ASAP if you are willing and able to help ([email protected]). Times to be determined, but most likely the battle will run from 8:30/9am-11:30/11:45, with a few breaks in between. The top team from each division will move on to the Regional Competition to compete against other teams in our area. Now what?
Please have your OBOBers read their selected books, either to themselves, to you, a friend or maybe a dog or stuffed animal. Please ask them questions often about the books and get them talking about the characters and details of the books. They should also practice and memorize all of the titles and authors. Lastly, practice on Quizlet.com at home! There are games, flashcards and quizzes on OBOB books that will help your reader be more successful. Forms: Please make sure that your child has turned in their contract, as I don't have all of the contracts turned in. Also, please make sure to get the t-shirt forms and payments turned in by the end of the month. For the 6th-8th graders, please turn in the permission slips for the book "Popular: A Memoir" if you choose to have your student read it. Keep up-to-date: We have our own City View Charter OBOB website! Check it out! http://obobcityviewcharter.weebly.com You will find our current newsletters, important dates, information, links to Quizlet, etc. You'll also find the book lists and book trailers. What is happening on Fridays? The students are practicing the titles and authors, as well as questions that we've printed from quizlet.com. Thank you to our volunteers for making these meetings a success! What is OBOB all about?
